The Books “An Animated Description of Mr. Maps” from Lost and Safe – 2005
  • Genre: folktronica, experimental, sound collage
  • Years active: 2000 to present
  • Origin: NYC
  • Important Humans: Nick Zammuto and Paul de Jong
  • Interesting Facts:
    • Record with extensive use of audio samples and nontraditional instruments
    • Some observers contend that their music is aleatoric, but Zammuto has disagreed, saying the music is very tightly controlled.
    • Dislike the idea of touring but state that it is a necessary evil due to their music being acquired via file sharing as opposed to legal purchasing
    • Influenced by Nirvana, David Bowie, Roxy Music , new wave and classical
      • Squarepusher and Aphex Twin
      • Guitar, banjo, or cello “blended” with a wide range of audio procured from various cassette tapes found at thrift stores

A forewarning, I absolutely love this song so the response will probably be heavily biased.
In an absolute wonderful display of instrumentation, this song really captivated me with it's wonderful and meaningful lyrics combined with a catchy tune and skillful handling. I really enjoyed the percussion in particular since it reminded me of a certain band who uses trash cans as percussion instruments. Overall very innovative and wonderful 10/10
