Flying Lotus “Never Catch Me” feat. Kendrick Lamar from You’re Dead!
  • Genre: Experimental, Hip Hop, Electronic, IDM, Wonky
  • Years Active: 2005-Present
  • Origin: LA
  • Important Humans: Steven Ellison
  • Interesting Facts:
    • produced most of the bumper music on Adult Swim
    • produced and directed 5 films
    • founded his own record label, Brainfeeder
    • about the actual process of death for the listener
  • Quote:
    • “Every decision that I made was because of the concept. There’s no loose ends in this record. There’s no like, ‘Oh, I’m just gonna put this on the album because it sounds dope.’ There were a lot of tracks I could have put on there – like club tracks, bangers, whatever – but they didn’t fit conceptually so there was no point. I’m not gonna call the album You’re Dead! and be like pop singles …wobble bass and whatever.” - Ellison

I liked how it opened up with Kendrick he fits really well with the beat and it sounds somewhat like something from his older albums. When it went to just instrumentals the beat was really nice and catchy. The song felt short though it needs something more maybe if Kendrick had one more verse it would have been a little better. I would give it a 6 out of 10.

I feel like a lot is going on in this track. The beat and the vocals are fast but there are soft melodic tunes than play at the same time... I don’t know how I feel about that. Maybe without the vocals the instruments would really stand out and be beautiful on its own. I don’t like the vocal over top of the beat. It doesn’t mesh well together in my opinion. I can tell that it’s a heartbeat.

When I first heard this song, I was somewhat confused with the direction it was heading, but then I took another listen and kinda see why this grabs hip-hop artists. I thought this song was intriguing how it started out with a somewhat slow tempo and goes a little faster like a heartbeat. This song could was a little misleading the first time, but once I listened the second or third time, I knew this song had a bit more meaning and complexity. Other than just a simple repetitive rhythm you would hear from any other hip-hop artist. Near the very end of the song, I didn't like it all too much, though I get why it sounds like that, symbolizing a heartbeat dying out. I would've given this track a 5 or 6 just by how confusing it had led out to be, but now I would confidently give this song an 8/10, a surprisingly great track in my honest opinion.
